A novena is nine days of prayer for one intention, modeled on the apostles and Mary, who “joined together constantly in prayer” in the days before Pentecost (Acts 1:14). Catholics pray a 9 day novena to St. Joseph for employment because Joseph worked with his hands and provided for the Holy Family, so he knows what it’s like to need steady work.

You can start today. The steps and all nine daily prayers are below. If the job search has worn you down, a silent retreat can give you a few quiet days to pray and reset.

How Do You Pray the Novena to St. Joseph the Worker?

Here’s how to pray a novena, step by step:

  • Name your intention, such as finding a job, landing an interview, or choosing between offers.
  • Pick a time you can keep each day, like early in the morning.
  • Begin with the Sign of the Cross.
  • Read that day’s short reflection and prayer below.
  • Add an Our Father, a Hail Mary, and a Glory Be.
  • Close with the novena prayer to Saint Joseph (below Day 9).
  • End by repeating your intention in your own words.

The whole thing takes about five minutes. If you can, attend Holy Mass on one or more days of the novena. If you miss a day, pick up where you left off and keep going. For other ways to pray, see our guide to types of Catholic prayer.

Daily Novena Prayer: Nine Days With Saint Joseph

The nine prayers below are original to Heritage, written for this St. Joseph novena for employment. Each day follows one part of Joseph’s life.

Day 1: Joseph’s Trust

When an angel spoke to Joseph in a dream, he trusted God and took Mary home as his wife (Matthew 1:24).

St. Joseph, you trusted God when the road ahead was unclear. Help me trust him as I start this search. Calm my fears and keep my heart open to his plan. Amen.

Intention: the courage to begin.

Day 2: Joseph’s Courage

Joseph rose in the night and led his family to Egypt to keep them safe (Matthew 2:14).

Dear Saint Joseph, you acted quickly when God called you to move. Give me courage to apply, follow up, and try doors I’ve been afraid to knock on. Amen.

Intention: boldness in the search.

Day 3: Joseph’s Craft

Joseph was a carpenter, and Jesus was known as “the carpenter’s son” (Matthew 13:55).

St. Joseph, you used your skills to serve others. Help me see the gifts God has given me and find work where I can use them well. Amen.

Intention: work that fits my gifts.

Day 4: Joseph’s Provision

Joseph worked to support Mary and Jesus with food, shelter, and a home.

Heavenly Father, through the prayers of St. Joseph, provide for me and the people who depend on me. Meet our needs and teach me to trust your care for each day. Amen.

Intention: provision for my family.

Day 5: Joseph’s Quiet Faithfulness

The Gospels never record a single word Joseph spoke. He served faithfully without needing credit.

St. Joseph, you did your work well without being noticed. Keep me faithful in small things while I wait. Remind me that God sees my effort, and free me from comparing myself to others. Amen.

Intention: peace while I wait.

Day 6: Joseph’s Patience

In Bethlehem, Joseph found no room at the inn and made a place for Jesus in a manger (Luke 2:7).

Dear Saint Joseph, you experienced closed doors and long searches. When I hear “no,” help me keep going without losing hope. Amen.

Intention: perseverance after rejection.

Day 7: Joseph’s Protection

Joseph guarded Mary and Jesus from danger, and the Church calls him its protector.

Blessed Joseph, protector of families, guard my household during this uncertain time. Keep us united, keep us from anxiety, and keep us close to Jesus. Amen.

Intention: protection for my family.

Day 8: Joseph’s Search

When Jesus was lost in Jerusalem, Joseph and Mary searched for three days until they found him in the temple (Luke 2:46).

St. Joseph, you searched until you found what mattered most. Lead me to the right job, the right people, and the right opportunity. Amen.

Intention: the right opening at the right time.

Day 9: Joseph’s Surrender

Joseph spent his life saying yes to God’s plan, even when it changed his own.

Lord Jesus, through the prayers of your foster father, St. Joseph, I place my search in your hands. Whatever comes, help me trust that you’re with me. Amen.

Intention: surrender and gratitude.

Closing Novena Prayer to Saint Joseph

Pray this original Heritage prayer at the end of each day:

O good Father Joseph, guardian of the Holy Family, you worked to provide for Jesus and Mary. Teach me to work as you did, and help me find honest, steady work. Ask God to give us our daily bread, and stay close to me in every season of life. Jesus, Mary and Joseph, pray for me. Amen.

What Is the Powerful Prayer to St. Joseph for Employment?

Many Catholics turn to Pope St. Pius X’s prayer to St. Joseph the Worker. It begins, “Glorious St. Joseph, model of all who devote their lives to labor,” and asks for the grace to work with patience, joy, and a pure intention. You can add it to each day of the novena.

What Is St. Joseph’s Prayer That Never Fails?

It’s a traditional prayer that begins, “O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interests and desires.” Old prayer books claim it has “never been known to fail,” though there’s little evidence for its legendary first-century origin.

Searches for “novena for employment miracles” often lead here too. A novena is trust in God, not a guarantee. God hears every prayer, and his answer may come in a different form or on a different timeline than you expect.

What Is a Good 3-Day Novena to Pray for a Job?

If you can’t commit to a full St. Joseph novena for a job, take three days from this one: Day 1 (trust), Day 4 (provision), and Day 9 (surrender), prayed back to back. It also works as a novena for job interview success: start three days before the interview and finish the morning you go in.

How Do You Pray the Novena Alongside Your Job Search?

Prayer and effort belong together. Pair each day of your novena to St. Joseph for a job with one concrete step:

  • Day 1: update your résumé.
  • Days 2 to 8: reach out to one new contact each day.
  • Day 9: follow up on every open application.

Small actions keep the search moving, and prayer keeps your heart steady.

Who Is the Patron Saint of Job Seekers?

St. Joseph is the best-known patron saint of job seekers, and many Catholics also call him the patron saint of employment and the patron saint of jobs. St. Cajetan, an Italian priest whose feast is August 7, is also honored as a patron of the unemployed and job seekers.

When Should You Pray the St. Joseph the Worker Novena?

Any time you need work. Traditionally, it runs from April 22 to April 30, so it ends on the eve of the feast of St. Joseph the Worker on May 1. Praying it then ties your St. Joseph the Worker novena for employment to the feast, but job searches don’t wait for May.

How Can Discernment Guide Your Job Search?

A job search is also a season of discernment. Beyond asking God for any job, ask what kind of work he’s calling you to. Notice which opportunities bring peace and which bring dread, and ask God to help you recognize the difference. Talk with a trusted friend or spiritual director, and give yourself quiet time to listen.

Where Can You Step Away to Pray and Discern?

Heritage sits on about 200 acres in rural Georgia, roughly two hours from Atlanta, in Georgia’s oldest Catholic settlement. You can pray at the historic Church of the Purification, which dates to the late 1800s, walk the trails, and spend time in the prayer gardens.

A personal retreat at Heritage includes a private room with a private bath and all meals, so you can leave the busy world behind and pray. If you’re in the middle of a hard job search, we would be glad to help you plan a few days away.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is a Novena?

It’s a Catholic prayer said on nine consecutive days for one intention. It follows the example of the apostles and Mary, who prayed together in the nine days between the Ascension and the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. People pray novenas to saints, like St. Joseph, asking for their intercession.

Is There a Novena to St. Joseph That Never Fails?

Not in the sense of a guaranteed result. The traditional “never fails” prayer is a popular devotion, but its legendary origin isn’t documented. Pray it with trust, knowing God answers every prayer in his own way and time.

How Long Is a Novena to St. Joseph for a Job?

Nine days, with a short prayer each day that takes about five minutes. If time is short, you can pray a three-day version before an interview. Many people repeat the novena if their search continues.

What If I Miss a Day of the Novena?

If you miss a day, don’t start over. Pray the missed day’s prayer as soon as you remember, then continue. A novena is about faith and persistent prayer, and God sees your effort and intention more than a perfect streak.

Who Is the Patron Saint of Employment?

St. Joseph, because he worked as a carpenter and provided for the Holy Family. St. Cajetan is also honored as a patron of the unemployed. Catholics often ask for the intercession of both while looking for work.
